Sussex County Community College has named Sparta native Bobby Leach as its new head football coach for the Skylander program. Leach has stepped into the role with a clear vision for the program’s future.

Leach brings a wealth of knowledge to the program from his experience as a player throughout his high school and college years. A 20-year coaching career has earned him many accolades; one notable is leading Sussex County Technical School to the state playoffs in 2015.

His focus for the Skylanders is to develop a competitive winning team while creating opportunities for local student-athletes to continue their collegiate years close to home. He is actively recruiting locally.

"If this program was available when I graduated from Pope John, I would have jumped on the opportunity," Leach said.

Athletic director Todd Poltersdorf expressed confidence in the hire.

"I’m certain he’s going to do an amazing job with our program,” said Poltersdorf.

Leach’s approach to coaching centers on an "old-school" philosophy rooted in strict discipline and accountability; a "no coddling" approach. He expects his players to work hard and is not afraid to raise his voice during training if necessary.

He shared one of the things he tells his team: "If I’m not yelling at you, you’re probably not gonna help us."

Defensive line coach Adam Vazquez described Leach as "tough but fair," noting that players have responded positively to his leadership and the high standards he sets for the roster.

The connection was evident during a recent interview when a player knocked on Leach’s door with a personal matter that would keep him from attending practice later in the day. Leach paused the interview to give the student his full attention, offering guidance and support in a quiet, respectful exchange — demonstrating a role that extends well beyond the football field.

Afterward, the student, Demarius Posey, described what Leach means to him.

"He is a really good dude,” said Posey. “He’s genuine and honest. He is extremely kind and helpful. To him, we are more than a team he is building; he’s building a family."

As he begins his tenure, Leach’s vision remains clear: Develop local talent and bring a sense of pride to the college, the student body and the local community.

With daily practices already underway, the Skylanders are gearing up for the season’s kickoff. The first game is set be played on August 29. Be sure to head to the field to support the team!
