Skylands Museum of Art Comes to SCCC

Staff Writer

On March 6th, the Skylands Museum of Art opened its exciting new exhibition in the campus Gallery in Building C. Lasting until April 24, the exhibition, entitled ‘METAmorphosis,’ comprises more than two dozen fine art sculptures, prints, and paintings created by nine professional artists who tapped into their incredible imaginations to create works born from the everlasting worlds of myths and fairy tales.

The artworks, already embroiled in the Skylands Museum of Art’s signature focus on art relating to fairy tales, offer insights about ourselves, personal growth, and transformation along life’s journeys, as stated by the museum.

The opening reception, which will encompass a meet and greet with the artists, will be held on March 6th from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. Sculptor and Skylands Museum of Art founder, Ailene Fields, will attend along with artists from all over the world including painter Brian Branch, interdisciplinary visual artist Joseph Christiana, printmaker Penny Dell, artist David Derr and sculptors Karen Dimit, Bruce Lindsay, and Gina Novendstern.

Conceptually, the word “metamorphosis” refers to symbolic, profound, or dramatic transformations of all types. Such transformations can be either physical, mental, or can transcend both. Deeply, the concept of the metamorphosis can signify personal growth, self-realization, and reinvention, themes that are at the heart of the METAmorphosis exhibition.

Significantly, METAmorphosis, other than being on display in the campus gallery until the end of April, will also play a crucial role in the 2026 Teen Arts Festival. During the Teen Arts Festival, held at SCCC on March 10th, the METAmorphosis artists will be meeting with students from schools all across Sussex County to provide professional insights into careers in the visual arts and will also shed light on their creative processes in an effort to inspire the next generation of artists.

When referring to the purpose of the METAmorphosis exhibition as a whole, Skylands Museum of Art founder Ailene Fields stated, “As Einstein believed, these tales foster imagination, curiosity, and creative thinking, which he believed were critical for scientific development and intellectual growth. Plus, they provide great insights for navigating life today!”

To attend the Grand Opening of Metamorphosis, please register on the museum website at www.skylandsmuseum/events.org. Admission to the Opening Reception is free and open to the public.

New Jersey artist, David Derr’s The Gift of Fire shows Prometheus in bold colors. The painting will be on exhibition at the Metamorphosis.

New York sculptor, Gina Novendstern created Defiant Goddess representing Amazonas in bronze and steel, which will be on exhibition at Metamorphosis.

American sculptor and Skylands Museum of Art founder, Ailene Fields of Andover, NJ will exhibit Cassandra at the Metamorphosis exhibition.
